General Notes: Born in Yanosek (Polish-Lithuiana) the twin son of a Riskowitz and a Polish Landlord's daughter (out of wedlock). He remained with the Riskowitz family while the other twin (son ?) was raised by the Polish Family.
Research Notes: This family tree was committed to paper by "Oom Norm" (Norman Riskowitz) in 1979 and has not been updated since. Records relating to the Riskowitz Name and ancestry cannot be found prior to Zvi-Hirsch Riskowitz. All Jewish records in Lithuiana have been destroyed.
The origin of the Family Name Riskowitz is apparently thus:
The original family name was Kohen (which means "High Priest", when the branch of the Kohen family moved to Europe (/somewhere near to/or in Poland) the name was amended to the local language to mean the same (or as near as similar), and became "Zadek".
Zadek means "Knowledgable One" When the family again moved (probably near to/or into Germany), the name was amended to Katz (a contractim of Kohen and Zadek. Again, on moving region, the name was amended to "Riez-Katz" (meaning husky branch of Katz family) On moving into the region of Poland, the name was amended to sound more Polish and became Riskowitz.
